   About

My area of research interest is Sphingolipid signaling, Cancer Biology and Tumor Immunology. Sphingosine-1-Phosphate (S1P), is a bioactive oncogenic sphingolipid, which regulates various aspect of carcinogenesis, and chemo- radiation resistance. S1P is metabolized by eight metabolic enzymes, including two sphingosine kinases, two S1P phosphatases, three lipid phosphate phosphatases and a S1P lyase. I have shown that dendritic cell S1P lyase regulates thymic egress of T lymphocytes and it also has a protective role in colon carcinogenesis. Furthermore, my lab has shown that the S1P metabolizing enzymes particularly lipid phosphate phosphatase 3 (LPP3) and SGPP1 serve as prognostic markers in lung adenocarcinoma patients. SphK1 is upregulated in the tumor tissues in several cancer types, and its expression correlates with poor prognosis. My lab is focused on understanding the mechanism of its dysregulation in oral cancer. In addition, using 3-D bioengineered model, I am exploring the role of S1P signaling pathway in chemoresistance. I am also interested to understand the role of microRNAs in the genetic susceptibility to oral cancer. My lab is funded by ICMR, LSRB (DRDO) and DHR. I am serving as an Associate Editor of Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences.
