About

The Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine was established in the year 2013 under the exemplary leadership of Professor Neelkamal Kapoor, with a total strength of five faculty members. Since its inception, the department has been committed to imparting quality education, delivering efficient diagnostic services, and engaging in meaningful research. Currently, the department has a faculty strength of eleven and is being headed by Professor Vaishali Walke, a dynamic leader. The department is engaged in diagnostic reporting of surgical pathology, cytopathology, and hematology specimens, besides teaching undergraduate (MBBS and Nursing) and postgraduate students (MD Pathology), and performing quality research activities in diverse clinical domains. The department offers

state-of-the-art diagnostic services and has well-equipped histopathology, immunohistochemistry, cytopathology, and hematology labs. The cytopathology lab also performs liquid-based cytology, apart from conventional cytology, for gynecological smears. The hematology lab is well equipped with a flow cytometer and performs HPLC for diagnosing various hemoglobinopathies. The coagulation lab offers specialized factor assays and a thrombophilia profile. The department has recently started offering molecular diagnostic services for certain pathology

sub-specialties and also offers clinical autopsy services for determining the cause of death. The undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs are planned according to the guidelines outlined in the Competency-based medical curriculum so that the students not only acquire the requisite knowledge and skills pertaining to cognitive and psychomotor domains but also develop competencies in attitudinal, ethical, and communication domains. The department actively takes part in community outreach activities to increase awareness regarding the screening of common cancers. The departmental faculty have been awarded many extramural and intramural research projects related to cancers, immunodeficiency disorders, hematology, genetic disease, renal disorders, etc., and have presented their work at various national and international conferences and also published in scientific journals of repute.

3	Cytopathology	Cytopathology focuses on examining cells from various body sites to detect cancer and precancerous conditions, infectious diseases, and other benign disorders. 4	Histopathology and Immunohistochemistry	Histopathology and Immunohistochemistry division provides detailed tissue analysis, identifying pathological conditions through microscopic examination. Immunohistochemistry, with its ability to detect specific antigens in tissues, plays a pivotal

role in diagnosing cancer and other diseases, offering valuable

insights for targeted therapies.
