About: The department was established on 15th April 2013 and offers regular out-patient and in-patient services to patients suffering from various musculoskeletal conditions. The department has a daily footfall of about 250-300 out-patients and about 45-50 patients are admitted at any given time. There are two units within the department. The outpatient clinics are conducted from Monday to Saturday. Clinical services: Trauma – the department works in close collaboration with the department of Trauma & Emergency Medicine (TEM), providing 24 x 7 services for trauma patients. A multi-disciplinary approach is adopted for the management of polytrauma patients. We are routinely treating complex intra-articular fractures of large and small joints, and pelvi-acetabular fractures. Arthroplasty – we provide services for total knee, hip, shoulder and elbow replacement surgery. The spectrum ranges from primary procedures to revision arthroplasty. Hand Surgery – we provide services for complex hand problems which include fractures, congenital deformities, wrist conditions, tumour, tendon injuries, peripheral nerve dysfunction, carpal revascularization, plastic reconstruction of hand, flap cover and tetraplegic hand reconstruction. Paediatric Orthopaedics – we provide services for complex paediatric conditions which include congenital and developmental disorders, fractures, growth modulation and limb lengthening. Club-foot clinic in collaboration with CURE International (CIIT) is conducted in the department every Wednesday. Spine surgery – we provide services for spine trauma including cervical spine injuries, degenerative spine conditions and spine deformity correction (scoliosis surgery), Pott’s spine and disc disease. Sports Injury – we provide complete range of services to help athletes - young or old, pro or amateur - reach their peak performances. Many national and state-level athletes have been treated by us for ligament injuries of the shoulder and knee. Commonly performed knee and shoulder arthroscopic procedures (keyhole surgery) include ACL reconstruction, PCL reconstruction, multi-ligament reconstruction of the knee, Bankart repair for shoulder instability and rotator cuff repair. The Orthopaedic department works in close collaboration with the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) for complete care of our patients. Academics: Master of Surgery (Orthopaedics) postgraduate programme is being offered by the department. The admissions are in January and July sessions through the AIIMS pre-PG examination conducted by AIIMS, New Delhi. The department has a rigorous academic programme which includes surgical audits, hands-on patient care, seminars, journal club, case presentation and weekly grand rounds. Classes and clinics for MBBS and BSc Nursing (Hons) students are conducted as per the academic schedule. The department in collaboration with the Bhopal Orthopaedic Surgeons Society conducts monthly academic meet in which case-based discussions are held by faculty and resident doctors.
Highlights: In addition to providing general orthopaedic services the department provides specialized services for Hand, Sports Medicine, Spine, Paediatric Orthopaedics and Arthritis. Dedicated patient care, clinical teaching and research are our core areas of priority.
